About the Columbia Headwaters
The Columbia Headwaters is the source of the 1953km (1214 mile) long Columbia River that winds through British Columbia, Montana, Idaho, Washignton, and Oregon en route to the Pacific Ocean. The Columbia River was traditionally the main transportation system and source of food of the Ktunaxa for thousands of years, and is the focus of the Ktunaxa Creation Story.

The Ktunaxa have an intimate connection with the Columbia Headwaters. There are numerous traditional use area that have been identified within Columbia Lake Provincial Park and the surrounding area of the Columbia Headwaters.

The Columbia Headwaters is also the start of a 175 km (110 mile) stretch of vibrant ecosystem that contains Columbia Lake, Windermere Lake, and the Columbia Wetlands. This entire areas is home to many unique plant and animal species, such as Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (blue- listed), badger (red-listed), and the great blue heron (blue-listed). This area is a critical part of the Pacific flyway for birds, and is almost the only remaining intact resting and breeding habitat for migrating and resident species.

There are already many strains on the Columbia River due to human use. There are 14 major hydro dams on the Columbia River, and upwards of 60 on the Columbia and all of its tributaries. The Columbia River has consistently shown up on the endangered rivers list of the Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia, and was highlighted at the Living Lakes Conference that was held in Invermere in 2004.
